Smart People (2008)
5/10
Despite having a cast filled with several well known names, this movie suffers from bad acting and a weak plot. Dennis Quaid gives his usual "Day after Tomorrow" crap performance as a depressed middle-aged professor.

Rocky Balboa (2006)
8/10
It's been rumored that Stalone wanted to make on last Rocky movie because he realized how bad his most memorable character had been cheapened through a series of sequels. Stalone must have put his heart and soul into this final sequel to the Rocky series, because the end result is probably one of the best dramas of 2006.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
10/10
Perhaps the only film that I will ever consider to be flawless. The writing, acting, directing and cinematography for this film are all superb. It has been my all-time favorite movie for several years now.

Amelie (2001)
9/10
I'm not a big fan of French cinema, but this film won me over. The lead actress Audrey Tautou did a wonderful job playing the quirky Amélie and the director brought a lot of color into the film with many creative storytelling techniques.

Step Brothers (2008)
9/10
Surprisingly this was one of Will Ferrell's best movies to date. The screenplay was co-authored by Ferrell and Adam McKay, who have worked on several movies previously, but somehow this movie ended up with a unique comedy not seen in any other Ferrell movie. The pair also produced the internet short "The Landlord" which shares a lot of the same sense of comedy.

WALL·E (2008)
9/10
Wall-E tells a charming story about the last robot on Earth left behind to clean up after the mess of humanity. The story carries a lot of subtext about pollution, recycling and mass consumption to mention a few. The story is directed slightly more toward an adult audience than previous Pixar films and it's definitely worth seeing while it's still in theaters or owning on Bluray.

Hancock (2008)
6/10
An anti-superhero movie staring Will Smith, "Hancock" takes a new approach at telling the story of a superhero not wanted by the public. The film suffers from weak visual effects and an even weaker plot. While the movie starts off in an okay diection, the ending makes absolutely no sense and leaves you wanting your money back.

The Children of Huang Shi (2008)
8/10
This drama was a great biographical film about the journalist George Hogg who saved a group of orphaned children during the Japanese occupation of China in the late 1930's. This film hasn't received enough publicity for what a great story it is, I highly recommend it for a rental.

Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?...
4/10
Morgan Spurlock's second major documentary film starring himself is more of a tour around the middle east seeking opinions about Al Queda and the American image. He invests less time actually searching for Bin Laden than he does showing his pregnant wife at home. The movie offers a few interesting Islamic perspectives through interviews, but Spurlock doesn't make a good interviewer and has trouble crafting questions to find many good answers.

Role Models (2008)
8/10
A surprisingly good comedy starring two actors (Scott and Rudd) that I think deserve more credit for bringing unique styles of humor to the films they star in. The plot is generic enough to please anyone, but please leave your kids at home.

Definitely not the powerhouse comedy I expected from the all-star comedic cast and directorial reprise of Stiller. Ben Stiller plays a similarly dumb character that he did in Zoolander, Jack Black plays a cokehead, and Robert Downey Jr. plays a black guy. I have to give credit to Downey though for his excellent performance.

Iron Man (2008)
9/10
There really isn't much left to improve upon in Iron Man. The plot is rock solid and socially relevant, the acting by Downey was on target, and the action sequences are really good. Robert Downey, Jr. did a great job playing the character of Tony Stark by bringing some of his trademark humor to the role.

Taken (2008/I)
8/10
Liam Neeson stars in this action-packed movie about a retired spy father trying to recover his kidnapped daughter. The movie is filled with scenes that remind me of a 007 or Bourne film, but unlike the previously mentioned movies this movie offers a plot that allows the audience to sympathize with the main character.

A great way for documentary film makers to engage the audience is to present them with a call to action, but Moore's call to action in "Slacker Uprising" caused the film to become boring and repetitive. This movie serves as a reminder for the audience to get out and vote, but doesn't contain enough topics that will inspire anyone.

Seth Rogan brings his usual comical style to this film through both the acting and the writing. There are a few action sequences in the film including a hilarious car chase, a fight scene and a all-out guns blazing climax. It wasn't until half way through the movie that I really took a liking to this movie, but once it was all over I wanted more.

Hancock (2008)
4/10
I didn't expect much from this movie after seeing the first trailers over a year ago. The plot didn't appeal to me and the special effects in the trailer looked unfinished. When your trailer doesn't appeal to me and the movie has a budget of $150 million and stars Will Smith you have a problem. After I had a chance to see the movie my mind went unchanged about both the plot and special effects. The story makes absolutely no sense, even from the semi-fantastical perspective of a comic book. I really think this movie should have been rethought when they were in the screenplay drafting stage.
